Summer 2006 Newsletter

Quality partnerships are indispensable to the success of the Touch Foundation’s mission to improve the health care system in Tanzania.  This issue highlights the commitment from Tanzania’s President Jakaya Kikwete, as well as the new affiliation between the Weill Bugando institutions and the Weill Cornell Medical College and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Annual Report 2005

In the first year of incorporation, Touch Foundation underwent a period of rapid and coordinated growth of program goals, staff, and supporters.  Key events included a one million dollar grant to the Bugando University College of Health Sciences to support the training of doctors and other health professionals, and a symposium on human resources for health hosted by the Touch Foundation with key players from the international health community.

Winter 2005 Newsletter

The Touch Foundation held a symposium on “Human Resources for Health” for seventy-five leaders in the public health community, including foundation executives, and representatives of the Tanzanian and U.S. governments. Participants explored challenges facing the Weill Bugando University, Tanzania’s health care system, and that of other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Acting Now to Overcome Tanzanias Greatest Health Challenge - Addressing the Gap in Human Resources for Health

This report summarizes the findings from a 2004 field visit by a McKinsey team to Tanzania. The report introduces a three-pronged approach for addressing the country’s severe health care crisis.

The Twiga Initiative: Expanding Health Worker Training Across Tanzania

Tanzania suffers from one of the worst health worker shortages in the world. In developing their response to the crisis, the Tanzanian government turned to the Touch Foundation and McKinsey & Company and asked that we conduct the diagnostic phase of their Twiga Initiative, a program designed to double the nation's health worker training capacity. Our team developed a strategy to optimize and expand the existing current training network to create an immediate and sustainable impact.
